Biography

Hello my name is Sallyjane or as some call me Sj. I started training as an artist very young. I had a natural knack for drawing and would draw the images in my coloring books instead of color them. My parents would get frustrated because I would want new books and the old ones were still empty. My father started working with me as a young child on the fundamentals of art and design. Just as my Grandfather made me practice scales for hours till I had mastered them, my father made me practice line, form, and shape, light and shadow, and the likes for hours on end.

By the time I was twelve years old I was taking adult art classes studying under a professional artist. As a freshman in High school I was accused of cheating on my first art project in that art class, because the teacher did not think a kid my age could do art of that caliber. After a conversation with my parents and
seeing other examples of my work she changed the “F” to and “A+” and apologized profusely. By the age of 17 I was studying under a renowned Calligrapher. I also started as a teenager working with my father who was a professional photographer in the black and white darkroom. At that time I also took photography classes through adult education (again the only kid in the class in both the calligraphy and photography classes).

After High School I became an apprentice under a textile artist who taught me to spin fiber into thread, weave cloth, dye textiles, and many other textile design methods. From there I enrolled in the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco California. There I studied design and illustration.
During my time at FIDM I excelled beyond imagine building up a great report with the faculty who got to know me through tutoring other students and my own personal achievements. I was rewarded for my Achievements at the college with an invitation to have lunch with a favorite fashion designer.

From here I designed wedding gowns, costumes (for productions that were viewed by audiences of 10,000 or more as the costume director), murals, interiors, and much more.

In 2004 I decided to return to college and complete my Bachelors degree in Digital Art / Graphic Design. Again I excelled in college and graduated with a 4.0 and the honor of Summa Cum Laude. Since then I have been freelancing as a designer and illustrator.

Thank you,
Sallyjane

Who I Am!

sjlogo
Above is the Sj Illustration Logo. I believe that logos should be an image of who you are, so for me as a professional illustrator I wanted my logo to show who I am. Working my S.J. into the self portrait was even better. For many years I thought of myself as a Tom Boy, but I have been finding that in reality I have a feminine side. I also have a fun whimsical side that comes through in some of my work, but then I am discovering that little bit of darkness that comes out as I paint what I see in the world. As in Two Faced (Gossip) on the Home page. Then you find the realistic side where I illustrate what I can best describe as the Creator's Beauty, nature! Scroll down to see my one of my favorite birds the Blue Heron.
